Civilization is more likely to stay intact, thrive, and expand when altruism is the consistent policy of government. No, altruistic expression is not a single answer. Simple answers are not productive by themselves, but they are a good summary of the motivation for policies that consider the overall picture of society.
Quora is a website I have been on quite a bit and I encountered an answer by Ernest Adams. He answered the question Why do poor people deserve welfare benefits? All of society is interdependent. Separation is an illusion that cannot be sustained. Much has been written about this concept of interdependence.
A scholar by the name of Thomas Merton wrote that No Man Is an Island who makes good points about the interdependence of people. That sentiment is echoed by Stephen Covey in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It was the first book I read in 1990s which convinced me to consider the interdependence notion of the world. The world can improve through altruism in action and Ernest Adam’s points are useful to consider.
