I applaud the decision in Arkansas to take a moment to reconsider the death penalty. While my experience is that these decisions tend to result in the decision to go ahead with the act, that there is even a question about applying death is a good situation. I was once an idealist who saw in our modern age that such practices of the past would be fully abolished as the society became more modern. I’ve learned in past years that situations change and it is fully within the capacity of civilization to regress and advance at the same time. That means that modern life is a mix of old and new at the same time. This is a better world than what history records in past centuries but there remains great limitations to moving to the next level.
